Eyes on the Prize

Watching the Democratic debate tonight, I had two reactions:

1. Obama is ready to be President, far more so than the others I think. His answers, especially on the tough foreign policy questions, showcase a mental agility and an ability to deal with problems — especially the “unknown unknowns” — that clearly surpasses the others.

2. It’s now clear what he has in mind — a 1932 sized realignment for the Democrats. His model isn’t JFK — it’s FDR. That might have been a fanciful thought before Iowa. Now it seems possible.

The Turnout in Iowa

One of the best things about the night has been the turnout at the caucuses.

Nearly double what it was in 2004, and almost quadruple (I believe, lazy web prove me wrong) almost triple 2000.

For political insiders and junkies, there is also this: Ann Selzer nailed the polling for the Des Moines Register, especially the predictions/projections for first time caucus-goers and independents. Most pols (especially those working for Hill and Edwards) poo-poohed her methodology. But she nailed it, again. Backstory here.

“They Said This Day Would Never Come”

Barack Obama gave one of the best speeches tonight I’ve seen from a politician in my lifetime.

It was a thrill to watch, and to see him take Iowa so decisively. On to New Hampshire.

Online Business Models

I agree totally with this:

To me its really simple. You can’t monetize web services very well until you have an audience of scale. Jason Calacanis suggests that 10mm monthly uniques is where you have scale. I think it can be less in some cases (highly targeted services) and more in some cases (social nets). But every ounce of time, energy, money, and brainpower you spend on thinking about how to monetize will take you away from the goal of getting to scale. Because if you don’t get to scale, you don’t have a business anyway.

Iowa Caucuses

Here’s Barack’s final appeal to Iowa voters. Should be an interesting night.
